In recent years, an unexpected word has entered the vocabulary of charming European vacations:  barge.

Barge rentals range from the do-it-your self approach (called "self-catering" in Europe), to pampered trips with fine wines and gourmet meals.  Often, bicycles are included in the holiday, so you can explore the countryside near the canals or rivers you're drifting down.

France is one of the most popular locations for barging; the Thames, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg,  and parts of Germany are popular too.

According to a veteran of  "Do-it-yourself barging", the cost of self-catered barging is roughly equivalent to renting a cottage. A a small boat, suitable for two adults and one child, might cost $600/week off-season, $1000/week in peak season.

"the boats are equipped much as you'd find with a RV, including small bedroom(s), bath with shower, living area and a small kitchen. In addition, there is plenty of deck area where you can sit in good weather. You won't have much of a problem piloting a rented boat, even if you're a novice. Maximum allowable speeds are quite low in the neighborhood of 5 mph to minimize disturbing other boats with your wake and to avoid erosion of the banks. At that speed you can't get into much trouble.

At the other end of the spectrum, check European Waterways which promises "floating country inns" with tapestries and French antique furniture, spa-pool, and air conditioning.
