Old Faithful Inn
The
Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park is a stunning piece of
architecture, and
one of the best examples of a "rustic elegant" log hotel.
Old Faithful Inn
This huge balcony at the Old Faithful Inn looks out at the famous geyser. Architect Robert Reimer placed the Old Faithful Inn so that a visitor's first sight would be the natural and not the man-made wonder. Then he built a masterpiece of rustic architecture.

History of the Old Faithful Inn
Before 1903, the well-heeled visitors who came to Yellowstone had no convenient way to visit the Park's star attraction, the Old Faithful Geyser: visitors either made a day-trip by stagecoach, or roughed-it overnight in the Shack Hotel.
That winter, forty laborers set to work, in the middle of nowhere: horses had to bring in supplies, and the weather was so cold that (the story goes) nails had to be heated so they wouldn't shatter.
Reamer, a mere 29-year old, had an ambitious vision for the Old Faithful Inn: he wanted to celebrate natural wood and stone, and define a whole new style of rustic elegance.
