Where is Mohonk Mountain House?
Mohonk Mountain House is 90 miles north of NYC near New Paltz, New York, in the Shawangunk Mountains, surrounded by forests and 85 miles of trails.
What's special about Mohonk Mountain House?
Mohonk Mountain House is a survivor from an era of upscale mountain lodges, dates from 1869, and is still run by the founding family. A 251-room "Victorian castle" sits imposingly on low cliffs by a mountain lake: no wonder the place is a National Historic Landmark.
Mohonk Mountain House: Activities
Mohonk Mountain House suits those who want to get outdoors. Complimentary activities on the 2200-acre grounds include: daily guided hikes, tennis, midweek golf (9-hole), fishing, boating, swimming in Lake Mohonk, croquet, fitness classes, and Kids' Club with lots of outdoor fun (summer and some weekends throughout the year). Pay extra and you can also do horseback riding, carriage rides, and weekend golf. There's a spa too, of course.
The resort is open year-round: in winter, guests can try x-country skiing on 35 miles of trails, snowshoeing, supervised snow-tubing, and ice-skating including skating parties in the Victoria Pavilion.
Mohonk Mountain House also has theme programs, such as Haunted Haunts and Happenings at Halloween.The gardens, by the way, are a point of pride; there's even a Victorian maze, and theme programs for gardeners.
Kids Club in summer has three age groups: two to three; four to six; and seven to 12. Teen program in summer, too.
Summer rates start at $415/per room/per night for two adults; price includes three meals daily plus afternoon tea and cookies. Kids 4 to12 pay $82. (See web site for current rates.) Watch for specials where kids pay half-price, or may even be free.
