Grand Harbor Resort, Dubuque Iowa - Indoor Waterpark

By Teresa Plowright, About.com

Where is the Grand Harbor Resort & Waterpark located?

Grand Harbor Resort is on the Mississippi River at The Port of Dubuque, Iowa. Dubuque bills itself "the Masterpiece of the Mississippi". Also at the Port of Dubuque complex, visitors will find: the National Mississippi Museum and Aquarium; the Grand River Center, the National Rivers Hall of Fame, Mississippi Riverwalk, and Alliant Amphitheater. River rides on the Spirit of Dubuque are also fun.

What's special about the Grand Harbor Resort for families?

Grand Harbor Resort is following a by-now well-established path to success in attracting family vacationers: the indoor waterpark attached to a resort. (See more Resorts with Indoor Waterparks, at TWKids.)

The resort has 193 guest rooms including 31 suites, with views of either the city or the Mississippi River. Every room has a mini-fridge and a microwave. There's a fitness center, interactive Arcade and Redemption Center, and River Walk Restaurant and lounge overlooking the Mississippi River and the indoor Waterpark.

All guests at the resort receive bracelets for the Waterpark admission. Room rates can be as low as $89/night (-check website for updates.)

Grand Harbor Waterpark

The 25,000 sq. ft. Grand Harbor Waterpark features include:

  • Huck Finn II four-story tree house that looks like a steamboat
  • waterslide, water cannons, squirt guns, a lazy river, pools, two giant whirlpools, a giant bucket that dumps 800 gallons of water every 9 minutes, and many
  • lazy river; inner-tube inside/outside waterslide
  • family-oriented aquatic activities
  • WaterSquirts Kids Club for ages 3 to 12
  • Waterpark Café serving beverages and snacks

Keep in mind about Grand Harbor Resort:

  • As indoor waterparks go, this one is dwarfed by the behemoths in waterpark-capital-of-the-universe, Wisconsin Dells, where for ex. the Kalahari resort has indoor space of 125,000 sq. ft.
  • the public can buy admission to the waterpark, which can mean more crowds and lineups for the waterslides
  • water reportedly has a salty taste!
  • watch for money-saving packages that include admission to the Spirit of Dubuque, the Aquarium, etc.
