Where is the Kohala Coast?
If you feel like lapping up a little luxury en famille, consider these eight upscale resorts on the northwest side of Hawaii's Big Island. The first in the group is located six miles north of Kona International Airport. The others are dotted further up the coast, in a 20-mile stretch with wide open spaces. .
What's special about the Kohala Coast?
For starters, 38,000 Conde Nast readers voted the properties along the Kohala Coast among the "Top Fifty Tropical Resorts Worldwide." Another claim to fame: sunshine year round. (Certain parts of Hawaii get plenty of rain.)
The Kohala Coast properties have beautiful and often very extensive grounds, lovely beaches, and all the spa-ing and golfing any vacationer could want. All eight offer kids' programs; you'll also find scuba, snorkeling, glass-bottom boats, wind-surfing, fishing, horse-riding, hiking, and whale-watching. Further afield on the Big Island, you can visit active volcanoes, or take a hike and see ancient petroglyphs.
