The Caribbean island of Curacao is known for diving, and for being one of the A-B-C Dutch Caribbean islands, outside the hurrican zone. (The others are Bonaire and Aruba.) Curacao has a Dutch colonial town, Willemstad that's fascinating to explore, with rainbow-coloured buildings along a canal, unique floating bridge, and a stunning museum.
The unique Hotel Kurá Hulanda Spa and Casino is located in Willemstad and covers 8 blocks that make up a "village", all beautifully restored. The photo shows part of the "hotel": guests stay in one-of-a-kind rooms in various Dutch colonial buildings. The complex includes a grotto pool, fitness center, courtyards, restaurant, and the Kura Hulanda Museum. (Overwhelming for young kids, though, unless there's a special program. Main focus is the history of slavery.)
Sister property Lodge Kura Hulanda and Beach Club provides the beach part of the vacation; a shuttle runs between the two properties, both of which are on the "Leading Small Hotels of the World" list ( -five stars required.)
The Kura Hulanda is luxurious but also family-friendly. Look for perks such as complimentary cookies on arrival, or deals such as kids under 12 eat free from childrens menu when dining with parents.
Frequent packages offer amenities such as use of snorkel equipment and complimentary loungers at pool and beach.
