Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground

Bottom Line: Fort Wilderness has loyal followers, and no wonder: it's a great way to enjoy all the benefits of a Disney World Resort at a fraction of the usual price.

Disney's Fort Wilderness: Review

A Great Family Option
Like all Disney World Resorts, Fort Wilderness spreads over a vast expanse and offers many fun activities. Fort Wilderness, however, has two unique things going for it: the camping experience, and an incredibly low price.

Another plus is that you can take a boat to/ from the Magic Kingdom. (This trip takes about fifteen minutes; in August we never waited more than five minutes for a boat.) We especially enjoyed taking the boat 'home" after the fireworks in Magic Kingdom, while the rest of the crowd had to deal with car or bus!

Fort Wilderness Campground: Pioneer HallFort Wilderness is the home of the Hoop-de-doo Revue at Pioneer Hall, an all-you-can-eat barbeque plus Wild West entertainment Some call it hokey, some return every year-- decide for yourself, but be aware that it often sells out in advance.

Fort Wilderness Activities

Other activities include: renting bikes, canoes, pedalboats, kayaks, or fishing gear; evening campfire with singalong, marshmallow roast, and Disney flick; swimming pool; horseback rides; petting farm, pony rides, and more -- see details.

Campsites are spread out on many different loops, some with full-service hook-ups, some only for tents. (Got a pet? Request on of the campsites where pets can camp too.) Comfort stations are always close; they're air-conditioned, spotless, and have private showers, laundry, phones, and ice machines. Two Trading Post general stores sell real food at reasonable prices.

Check-in at Fort Wilderness is a drive-through experience, and the fastest we experienced at WDW. Many guests rent golf carts to get around the grounds: cost is about $40/day. (Ask about specials.)

As with all Disney World Resorts, at Fort Wilderness you can:

  • use the excellent Disney bus system
  • enjoy Extra Magic Hour early entrance to one park each day
  • have purchases made in the parks delivered to your resort
  • make meal reservations at a touch of button
  • charge expenses to your room.
  • enjoy assured entrance to the theme parks on crowded days
