Crossing Borders with Kids
-continued from p. 1, Travel Documents - needed when only one birth parent is traveling
Documents for coming home
Finally: you may also need proper documents when returning to your own country. The US, for example, requires that you document both your citizenship and identity when you reenter the country.
Documentation requrements are becoming more demanding over time because of worldwide security concerns, so don't assume that whatever documentation you carried on your last trip will still be sufficient. This is especialy true for children: in the past very little documentation was required for children. If your chidlren don't have passports, you may be required to show both citizenship and an acceptable form of photo ID.
In the vast majority of cases none of these extra documents will be required, and you'll be cheerfully waved through officialdom and on to your destination. However --as with so many aspects of Travel With Kids-- it's far better to be prepared.
