Guide Review: Chenay Bay Resort

Chenay Bay Resort --with 50 cottages, on 30 acres-- is located three miles from the historic town of Christiansted. on St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. Kids stay free with parents; a meal plan is available.

This resort is casual, laid-back, and cottage-style. Cottages are all just a short walk from the beach and pool. Grounds have many trees and flowers such as hibiscus and bougainvillea. All cottages have fully-equipped kitchenettes-- see pictures of Chenay Bay cottages.

Chenay Bay: beach, pool, restaurant
Chenay Bay -beachThe beach is gentle and has a wide sweep. Snorkelling gear is available for guests free of charge; kids will enjoy trying out the snorkels and fins, and grown-ups might enjoy a snorkel too, though for real coral you'll have to take an outing (see below.) Guests also have the use of sea kayaks, sunfish, surfbikes, boogie boards, and floating mats.

The bar and Island House restaurant are located at the beach. The menu features fresh seafood, Saturday night Pig Roast and "West Indian feast" with entertainment. Recommended breakfast: french-toast stuffed with passionfruit.*

An inclusive plan is available for meals--probably a good idea, unless you have a car. There are no shops or restaurants nearby, though the resort does offer a shuttle service to Christiansted and to a grocery store, for a fee; see Customer Services at the Chenay Bay site. Kids under twelve eat free (with a paying adult.)

The Chenay Bay resort has one swimming pool near the beach: small but good enough for kids to have fun-- such as this bubble-maker session (right) with scuba gear, offered through the Cruzan Kids program. The resort also has several tennis courts.

Kids Zone
Kids can sign up for the Cruzan Kids program for ages 4 through 12; check days and rates at the Chenay Bay web site. Sample activities: learning to snorkel, shelling on the beach, nature hikes, field trips to botanical gardens or a historic plantation.

Out'n'About
US Virgin Islands (USVI): St. Croix Fort ChristianSt. Croix offers some terrific outings: see Top Ten Things to do in the USVI. Snorkeling at Buck Island is superb; night kayaking on a moonlit bay is a fine tropical experience. Definitely take time to explore colonial Christiensted, especially the fort by the bay (see right), part of a complex of perfectly restored buildings.
