Anne's
Land
There is, unfortunately, no actual
town in Prince Edward Island called Avonlea-- but still there's plenty for Anne
pilgrims to see.
A Virtual Tour Of Anne's Land takes you on a car trip through tiny P.E.I. starting from Summerside. After 23 miles (36.6 km) of pretty country, you reach The Anne of Green Gables Museum, in the house that Lucy Maud Montgomery called Silver Bush, and right by the Lake of Shining Waters. The nearby Heritage Antiques and Christmas Shop are loaded with Anne memorabilia.
By Mile 29, you're at New London, the birthplace of Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942). L.M. Montgomery not only achieved international fame in her lifetime, she put tiny Prince Edward Island-- and big empty Canada-- on the world's literary map. Her home is now a historic site; you can even see her wedding dress.
Mile 35 brings you to Cavendish, where you can see Green Gables house, where Anne supposedly lived; the Green Gables Post Office; and the cemetery where Lucy Maud Montgomery lies.
The Anne Of Green Gables Musical
A short drive from Cavendish is P.E.I.'s capital city, Charlottetown, and there-- every year for some
30 years-- the Confederation Centre of
the Arts has put on this
wonderful musical. Have a buffet at the Centre before the
show, and be prepared for a good cry.
"Dear
old world, you are very lovely,
and I am glad to be alive in you."
