Ready for the unexpected? The "Top Family Destination" picked in this poll is New Orleans: a place your Travel With Kids Guide personally longs to visit, but not one that's usually prominent on the family travel radar screen.

But surveys do have their quirks, especially with a relatively small pool of respondents -- in this case, 435.

Other findings:

• Orlando didn't even make the list of top ten family destinations
• 70% of responding parents named "sightseeing" as their their favorite activity on holidays
• 57% of respondants named the automobile as their preferred mode of transportation (--either their own car, or a rented vehicle)
• 34% of respondents picked Australia as the country or region they'd most like to visit
• and something no one can disagree with: 45% picked "use the internet as primary planning tool" as a major difference from travel when they were kids
