This year, families who live in six of Canada's provinces get a public holiday in February: B.C. had its first Family Day on Monday February 11, creating a long weekend holiday. In five other provinces, people get a holiday on the third Monday of the month: Alberta, Ontario, and Saskatchewan have a "Family Day", while Manitoba has Louis Riel Day, and Prince Edward Island has Islander Day. In these provinces, the holiday coincides with Presidents Day in the U.S.; B.C. considered choosing this date, but more than 30,000 online voters swayed the decision toward the second Monday in the month rather than the third.
February means serious winter weather in most Canadian provinces, so the Family Day long weekend getaway often means winter activities-- such as the "Family Day Festival" at Cobble Beach, a four-season destination just north of Owen Sound in Ontario, on Georgian Bay. Two and a half hours north of Toronto, Cobble Beach is a resort community with clubhouse, spa, fine dining restaurant, and a boutique inn. Winter activities include x-country skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding...
