Got kids who are preschoolers, homeschoolers, or otherwise free of the school schedule? October can be a great time to head to Europe: fewer crowds, lower prices... And with so much history, a family holiday can be a learning experience as well as fun.

Or take your chances with the weather in northern Europe. London has wonderful sightseeing, and top museums are free; London also has a Chocolate Week in October, which has got to be a good thing, plus a growing number of Halloween events.

Paris likewise has terrific sightseeing, and a family could also make a side-trip to Disneyland Paris, which celebrates Halloween in a major way.
