Corn mazes are great places to visit on a fall outing, but late summer is a prime time to visit too, when the cornstalks are likely to be fresh and green.
Corn mazes are fun in several ways. First, the aerial view is a work of art, cut out of acres of corn. For visitors at ground-level, the challenge is to solve clues and navigate through the labyrinth. Many corn mazes have night hours on the weekends, and families -- and teens-- can ramp up the fun by visiting in the dark with flashlights.
Also, many corn mazes add extra activities, such as hay mazes, hay rides, firepits and snacks, or (in October) a pumpkin patch. The Cherry Crest Adventure Farm in Lancaster County PA, for instance, has pedal karts, a farm wagon tour, a fudge shop, a hay tunnel and a giant hay chute slide, and lots more.
Weather permitting, many corn mazes stay open through Halloween.
