Riveted by news from Japan after Friday's devastating earthquake, I only learned today that the tsunami also hit the shores of Hawaii's Big Island.
Fortunately, Hawaii was spared major damage. And, as our Guide for Hawaii Travel reports, the impact on tourist infrastructure was small, and business "almost as usual".
At least one resort, however, was severely affected: the Kona Village Resort, on the Big Island. I've mentioned this resort in the past because of some interesting and uncommon features. Pricing includes meals, kids programs, and many activities (which is unusual in Hawaii). Also, guests are encouraged to have an "unplugged" getaway, and there are no phones or TVs in the thatch-roofed bungalows.
Though a newspaper article reports extensive damage, the Kona Village website looks forward to reopening.
