Jamaica: Beyond the Beach

Saturday January 10, 2009
Negril beach photoiI was updating material on Jamaica resorts this week, which reminded me of our own trip there a few years back, and how fascinating it was to learn a bit of Jamaican history. Two of my sons made the trip, and the one in Grade 7 did quite a presentation at school afterwards.

Yes, we did beach fun and watersports, too. But learning about Jamaica really added to the trip. It's odd, in a way, that resort vacations so often mean minimal interest in the country outside the resort. Jamaica's history is striking: you can learn a lot just by buying a good guidebook, such as Insight Guide Jamaica, with loads of illustrations. Or have a quick look online at Jamaica's National Heroes.

And highly recommended: explore outside the resort. Countrystyle Community Tours, for example, aims to show you some of the "real Jamaica" beyond the beach.
