Family Lanes for Airport Security Checkpoints

Wednesday November 12, 2008
Just in time for Thanksgiving Weekend travel: the TSA (Transportation Security Administration, in charge of security at airports in the US) is expanding "family lanes" to all US airports by Thursday Nov. 20 2008.

So far, the new lanes have been tried out at 48 airports, as part of "Diamond Self Select" line-ups for going through security checkpoints: passengers pick the line-up "lane" that best suits them. The Black Diamond lane is for Expert Travelers; Blue Square is for seasoned fliers who don't want to feel rushed; and Family/Special Assistance is for passengers traveling with small kids or strollers, passengers unfamiliar with security procedures, and passengers who may need assistance. You get to choose.

The Family/Special Assistance lane should also be used by "individuals carrying medically necessary liquids, aerosols and gels in excess of three ounces". So, definitely head to these lanes if you've got baby formula, cough syrup, or prescription meds along.
