The "DR" -- Dominican Republic-- is a hotspot for family vacations in the Caribbean, especially at resort areas such as Punta Cana.

For something different, try the North Coast: you can still stay at an all-inclusive, but easily explore outside its gates.

The (budget-friendly) Viva Wyndham Tangerine Resort, for example, is a short walk from the little town of Cabarete on giant Cabarete Bay: a great place for boogie-boarding (see photo), and kite-boarding (fun to watch.)

Other outings: town of Sosua (with dive shops for snorkeling); surfing lesson; horse-riding in the mountains; white-water rafting (really fun.) Or try an "ed-venture" safari bus tour: learn about the island, visit a typical home, take a river boat ride.
