Cancun and Mayan Riviera, post- hurricane

These two areas-- so popular because of their all-inclusive resorts-- were hit full-on by Hurricane Wilma. Reports say that virtually all hotels in Cancun were damaged to some degree, and full recovery will take months. The Riviera Maya, south of Cancun, seems to be in better shape...

These two regions fuel almost half of $11 billion of tourism revenue that Mexico depends on. Expect the hotels, resorts, and government to do their utmost to make repairs as fast as possible.

• update: in the Riviera Maya, it's hope that 70% of hotels will be operational mid-November, and 90% by mid-December; meanwhile, President Vicente Fox has pledged money to reclaim Cancun's beaches, and arranged tax relief and a line of credit for re-building. Read more.
