Ivan in the Caribbean: Resort Damage

As stunningly powerful Hurricane Ivan slams the Gulf Coast, the islands it hit in the Caribbean are in the recovery stage. Jamaica was fortunate, but still many resorts are closed temporarily: click to see reopening dates. Grenada and Grand Cayman Island suffered extensively: both are requesting outside aid.

Jamaica Resort Reopenings

  • generally resorts iin Jamaica escaped damage, and are either open or will reopen soon.
  • For info on Beaches resorts, check the Beaches site. Boscobel is to reopen Sept. 16, Beaches Negril Oct. 1, but check for updates.
  • Franklyn D. Resort and FDR Pebble suffered light damage and are due to reopen Oct. 9 2004. Check the FDR Holidays site for updates.
  • the Ritz-Carlton, Round Hill, and Sunset Beach Resort & Spa are open
  • Breezes resorts: the Breezes site reports: "as of September, 11, 2004, all Breezes Resorts in Jamaica and Curacao are open for business as usual with many guests on property." Check for updates.
  • Starfish Resort (part of the SuperClubs chain, with Breezes) is open.
  • the cruise ports in Montego Bay and Ocho Rios reopened, and the cruise schedule will return to normal next week.
  • Air Jamaica is allowing penalty-free reticketing until Sept. 30.
Other Islands
  • Beaches Turks & Caicos-- closed due to damage from Hurricane Frances-- is due to reopen Oct. 5 2004. Check for updates.
  • the Breezes site reports: "as of September 15, 2004 hurricane watches and warnings were issued for the Dominican Republic. Contact your travel agent or call call 1-800-Go-Super if you are a scheduled guest of Breezes Punta Cana or Breezes Puerto Plata and would like to change your existing reservations."
  • Cayman Islands: many resorts had damage and flooding; check the web sites of individual resorts. The Divi Tiara Beach Resort reports that it is open.
  • Grenada: some resorts will be closed for six months to a year. Check resort web sites.
